Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese does not make films. He makes confessions. Every frame he has shot in six decades of filmmaking carries the weight of a man who grew up watching the world from a tenement window in Little Italy, absorbing the violence and the beauty and the guilt in equal measure. He is the most important American director alive, and he has spent his career proving that the line between sinner and saint is thinner than anyone wants to admit.
His partnership with Robert De Niro produced some of the most ferocious performances in cinema history. Mean Streets established the template: handheld cameras, rock and roll soundtracks, men who destroy themselves with the same energy they use to stay alive. Taxi Driver turned that energy inward, creating a portrait of urban alienation so disturbing it became prophetic. Raging Bull is the film Scorsese thought would be his last, and he directed it with the desperate intensity of a man who had nothing left to lose. It is widely considered the greatest film of the 1980s.
Goodfellas changed the grammar of crime cinema forever. The tracking shot through the Copacabana, the freeze frames, the narration that makes you complicit in Henry Hill's seduction — every gangster film made since 1990 is working in Scorsese's shadow. Casino extended the formula to Las Vegas. The Departed finally won him the Oscar that should have come decades earlier.
His collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio brought a new chapter. Gangs of New York was operatic. The Aviator was obsessive. The Wolf of Wall Street was three hours of pure American excess that dared audiences to examine their own appetite for spectacle. Shutter Island proved he could work within genre while subverting it completely.
The Irishman, made with De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino, is Scorsese's elegy for his own legacy — a three-and-a-half-hour meditation on time, regret, and the cost of a life spent in violence. Killers of the Flower Moon expanded his scope to American history itself, telling a story of genocide through the intimate lens of a marriage built on betrayal.
Beyond his own films, Scorsese is cinema's most passionate advocate. The Film Foundation, which he created in 1990, has restored over 950 films from around the world. His personal documentaries — A Personal Journey Through American Movies, My Voyage to Italy — are essential viewing for anyone who wants to understand why movies matter. He has spent his life not only making great films but ensuring that great films survive.
He is 83 years old. He is still working. The day Martin Scorsese stops making films is the day American cinema loses its conscience.
